<image:title>Notes - Fairy tales & their magic - Fairy tales and their magic have never been more important than they are today!</image:title>
<image:caption>In a world where children are given tablets before they can talk, the innocence of a traditional childhood is breaking down and being taken over by technology. I believe children need to get back to their natural curiosities about how the world works, and fairy tales, though sometimes dark and terrifying, are a crucial childhood experience. In recent years we have seen an overwhelming sanitation of important storytelling culture. Parents are too quick to protect their children from creative problem solving when things don't go as planned. Fairy tales were originally community folklore, orally passed down through generations to teach valuable lessons. And children can understand what happens to rogue witches or trolls when they take things too far. They need both heroes and villains, and their creativity is at risk without this exposure. I urge parents to read the original versions written down by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and Charles Perrault, to name a few. Look at the pictures with your children, ask them questions, watch their eyes light up. We owe it to them and future generations to keep these tales and traditional story telling alive!</image:caption>

<image:title>Notes - The Artistic Process, pt. 2 - Once I am happy with the details in my drawing, I start to layer light washes of watercolor over the pencil, building up the colors slowly.</image:title>
<image:caption>Watercolor is tricky in that it takes a long time to dry in between layers, so I try to have several paintings going at the same time. I do use a hairdryer from time to time if I need to, but I think it “cooks” the paper, and you need to make sure the surface is really cool before you paint on it again. It goes along like this, layer upon layer, until I think it is ready for gouache emphasis. Gouache is just opaque watercolor, so if I am painting water or swan feathers, I will use white to pull out highlights.</image:caption>

<image:title>Notes - Early beginnings - As a child I would spend hours drawing images and characters from my favorite stories as I listened to them on records I obsessively checked out from the library every week.</image:title>
<image:caption>I also had several prized storybooks on rotation. Here I escaped into a world of magic and imagination, as characters worked out all sorts of predicaments by making deals with witches, fairies and little goblins, more often than not outsmarting them and conquering all sorts of hardships. Conjuring up images to match the words has always been the best part of what I do. To me there was something magical about the tradition of folklore and the stories and life lessons they told.</image:caption>

<image:title>Notes - The Artistic Process - The only pencils I can use now are leads in lead holders. I need as sharp of a point as I can get, and regular pencils are never quite sharp enough.</image:title>
<image:caption>Once I get a sketch somewhat settled, one of two things happens. I have this fantastic ancient Artograph projector, one that I learned how to use back when I went to my mother’s art classes at Orange Coast College in Southern California. It’s enormous, but nothing comes close to it for reducing or enlarging sketches that can be transferred onto my good watercolor board. It needs a very dark corner, and contortion to get beneath the lens to redraw carefully onto the final surface. When I do not not have access to that, I use Saral transfer paper, a graphite paper that works by placing graphite side down and sketch on top, tracing the image so it transfers lightly via graphite onto the final board. The problem with his method is that only a fuzzy ghost line shows up, so I have to redraw all the details and they almost never match the sketch I want to end up with. Additionally, I have to erase the graphite, and once you transfer onto your final board, you want to avoid as much erasing as possible. I don’t want to risk lifting any fibers that I plan to paint over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Mother Holly</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the first illustration I attempted for Mother Holly. I was deeply influenced by the landscapes by Hans Memling and other Flemish painters of that era. I could not stop working on this painting. Once I finished and realized how long I spent on it, I was worried that the book would take me years to complete. And I was right. It took me four years to finish 26 paintings. Little did I know this book would fall under the radar as it was published in September, 2001. Watercolor and gouache</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Mother Holly</image:title>
<image:caption>This is my favorite painting I have done to date. It is the first interior illustration from my book, Mother Holly. Maybe the best part of this painting was all the research on 18th century French farmhouses and costume. I had books open all over the place. I almost lost this piece in a recent house fire, but luckily only the frame was damaged. Watercolor and gouache</image:caption>

<image:title>Work - Mother Holly</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a scene from Mother Holly where the selfish and lazy sister Blanche is visiting Mother Holly’s house and refuses to do the housework that rewarded Rose. I scoured Dutch master interior paintings for this piece, and had so much fun placing odd things around the room to be discovered. And why wouldn’t Mother Holly have a parrot?
